Story 1

Blind Truth
            The sounds of the crashing waves reached my window with perfect clarity, the warm feel of the sun’s rays disappeared as the clouds crawled across the sky over head, and the loud chatters of birds were both near and far. Yet another beautiful day on the small island of Maui. I listened to the world around me as I was trying hard to finish my breakfast without spilling anything onto my cloths. The kitchen window was wide open, allowing a nice cool breeze to wash over me. Gabby grunted as she rolled onto her stomach and fell back to sleep.
            I wasn’t surprised that Gabby was still asleep this late in the morning. It was a nice quiet day. I still couldn’t believe that my dad was able to build a house of the most remote part of Maui; no loud cars, no obnoxious tourist, no annoying pets, no unwanted visitors; just the sounds of nature. The sounds of a car engine announced the arrival of a common quest. The engine cut-off as the car door was pushed open then slammed closed. The front door was flung open as a familiar voice called, “Alice?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            “I’m in here,” I answered loudly. The door closed and the loud stomping of shoes made their way to the kitchen entrance. “What took you so long to get here?”
            “I over slept.” The chair next to me screeched across the wooden floor, waking Gabby up. Gabby started to throw a fit, barking and growling at our guest. “Whoa, Gabby. It’s me.” This made Gabby bark even louder.
            “Yeah, Gabby. It’s just Cheshire, your best friend,” I said sarcastically.
            “Not funny, Alice. Geez, why does your dog hate me so much?” The ground shook as Robby struggled to keep Gabby from biting. “What did I do?”
            “Gabby, sit,” I said in a demanding voice. After a few seconds, Gabby obediently did as she was told. “Good girl.”
            “Thanks,” Robby sighed, happy to have Gabby no longer trying to bite his face off. “Are you done?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            “Yeah, let’s go,” I said softly as Robby’s hand hovered over my plate. I lifted myself from my chair and grabbed my backpack as Robby took my dishes to the sink. “Bye Gabby. Watch the house while I’m gone.”
            “Come on, Alice. We’re going to be late… again.” I felt Robby’s fingers curl around my hand, dragging me behind him as we left Gabby in the kitchen. “Hey. Why didn’t you call me last night? I stayed up until 1:00 this morning waiting.”
            “Was I supposed to call you last night?” I asked as he helped me into his truck.
            “Yeah, it’s Friday. You were supposed to call me to make plans for tonight,” Rob said in irritation.
I couldn’t understand why he was so bothered by a phone call. What was so important about tonight? “We’ll just wing it like we always do. It’s not that big of a deal.”
“Wing it? Ally, do you even know what today is?” A faint hint of anger lingered in his question.
Crap. “Um… Friday.” It’s not his birthday, is it? No, it’s only March; I still have another four mouths. Shit, what is it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It’s our five month A.V.S.,” he sighed. “I can’t believe you don’t remember.”
I laughed.
“Why are you laughing? What’s so funny?”
“Ha ha ha. Wow, Robz. You’re such a devoted boyfriend.” And he was.
“I’d have to be devoted if I’m dating you.” I could hear a bit of humor as he said this. “Loving you isn’t easy, you know.”
“I see. Should I get off here then?”
“Fuck. Sorry, that came out wrong. Loving you is easy; it’s taking care of you, that’s the hard part. Keeping you out of trouble is like making a curious kitten go to sleep.” He held my hand as a way of telling me that he really did love me. “But, that’s one of the things I love about you.”
“Okay. Who are you? And how long are you staying?” I said in a playful voice. He didn’t say anything, but I could tell that he was glad to know that I wasn’t mad anymore. Neither of us said anything for the rest of the trip as we made our way through traffic and into the school parking lot.
